How to Make a List of Programs to Target for Your Medical Residency Application
<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { color: #0000ff } –>
Because getting into residency continues to get harder each year, the submission of a strong residency application is critical. It’s important too, to ensure you create a realistic list of programs to target. When I review re-applicants’ candidacies to see what went wrong the year before, I oftentimes note that the applicants did not have realistic expectations.
If an applicant’s scores, letters of recommendation and medical school grades are suboptimal, there is little to no chance that person will match into a competitive specialty like dermatology, radiology and ophthalmology. Furthermore, even if an applicant is pursuing a less competitive specialty, the candidate must show early commitment to the field. That could mean research, successful rotations in the specialty and presentations or attendance at national conferences. Too often I see applicants pursue specialties for which their application demonstrates no particular connection.
Additionally, being an international medical graduate (IMG) may limit candidates. In 2010 only 47.3% of U.S. citizen IMGs obtained first year positions through the Match. Of those IMGs who were not U.S. citizens, only 39.8% matched (Source: ECFMG®). IMGs should consider this tough reality when making their lists.
Creating a list of programs to target with a residency admissions consultant can make a big difference. Good consultants can help you create a robust, realistic group of training programs. Because applicants can unknowingly undermine their chances of success with poorly considered decisions, inadequately compiled application materials and underdeveloped ERAS®, a qualified, personalized residency admissions consultant provides a great advantage. The bottom line: Consider working with a professional to get residency admissions help.
Residency admissions consulting companies come in a variety of forms. Some are bigger businesses that focus on admissions to several types of graduate programs – not just medicine. Others are smaller and provide a medical focus, but have a pool of consultants of varying quality. Finally, elite companies offer both the medical focus and a highly experienced consultant who works one-on-one with clients. These professionals are ex-admissions officers from highly respected medical institutions. They have the inside knowledge of how residency admissions work, providing individualized guidance to optimize applicants’ personal essays, ERAS and interview skills.
When choosing a residency admissions consulting company, a candidate should verify the company’s references and research its consultants. It is best if the company does not assign written materials to outside editors who cannot be evaluated. Elite companies that offer both the medical focus and a highly experienced consultant who works one-on-one with clients offer a large advantage in providing residency admissions help, especially during these competitive times.

Because Memory Isn’t Eternal: A Story of Greeks in Upstate South Carolina $14.95 In 1895 Nicholas Trakas left his village in southern Greece, boarded a steamship for America, and made his way to another southern village, Spartanburg, where he became the South Carolina city s first Greek resident. He opened The Elite one of the finest candy kitchens in the South, built a house on a lot he purchased for $44 and a pet parrot that could cuss in Greek, and began a wave of immigration from his home country into the burgeoning Upstate area.A century later his grandson, Deno Trakas, a writer and a professor at Wofford College, explores the peculiarly Southern version of the Greek-American story in Because Memory Isn t Eternal. By introducing us to four generations of Trakas family members, their remarkable friends, and their hard-working business partners, he tells a greater story and reflects on how these complex, larger-than-life characters have preserved the best of Greek culture down South. This intimate and often humorous memoir brings us stories of Greek-American marriages, food, language, restaurants, and religion, including the day two Trakas boys accidentally burned down the family s church. At Greek funerals there is the constantly repeated refrain:Aionia i mnimi May his (or her) memory be eternal. More often, Trakas tell us, memory is painfully, annoyingly short. His loving, illustrated tribute to Greek-Americans assures that these stories and this history will not be forgotten. |

Canyon of Dreams: The Magic and the Music of Laurel Canyon $17.95 A lavishly illustrated insider’s look at 80 years of music and culture in Laurel Canyon.  Laurel Canyon is a zip code with its own play list: to name just a few, Sonny & Cher, The Doors, The Turtles, Canned Heat, Monkees, Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Eagles, and Carole King all cultivated their immortal sounds in this L.A.-based musical fraternity.  Written by a long-time L.A. resident who knows them all, Canyon of Dreams traces the history of the community and its enduring legacy. Taking a deeply personal approach, it uses a multiple-voice narration based on exclusive interviews with the area’s musical elite. Because of their close and long-time connection with Kubernik, some of these stars are speaking openly for the first time.  Eye-opening both visually and informationally, this is a book no music lover can be without! Interview highlights include: - For the first time in years, the three surviving Doors talk about performances, recordings, band dynamics, and, of course, Jim Morrison  - Randy Meisner reminisces about the Eagles first gig and the recording of “One of These Nights” - Graham Nash reflects on life with Joni Mitchell and describes writing “Our House” - Lou Adler discusses his legendary Sunset Strip venues—the Whisky a Go-Go, Roxy Theater, Rainbow Bar & Grill, and Tapestry—and, with Michele Phillips, reflects on the Monterey Pop Festival. - Slash, a child of the Canyon, details the formation of Guns N’ Roses - And much, much more!  |

Communities and Communication: Building Urban Partnerships $14.35 The current paradigm of ‘partnership’ in urban development and management is widely used and accepted but there is little understanding of what makes partnerships work or fail. The broad premise that underpins this book is that a partnership is a relationship based on an agreement to share both benefits and risks. Partnership thus depends upon a high level of trust between partners. Trust depends upon understanding — understanding the strengths and weaknesses, goals and aspirations, and the capacities of each partner. Understanding depends upon communication — the ability to transfer comprehension and information.Three cities, one from each continent of the South, are studied for their complementary differences in experience and approach to local government and communication. Colombo has a long tradition of government support to community participation in slum upgrading but does not have a well-developed urban NGO movement. Nairobi has a well-organized urban NGO sector but the city has both a weak democratically-elected City Council and a centrally appointed Provincial Administration. Rio de Janeiro, which is considerably bigger than the other two cities, does not have a tradition of participation and recent municipal upgrading initiatives fail to demonstrate much meaningful resident involvement. What emerges is a picture of misunderstanding, mistrust and prejudice. The manipulation of rumour and half-truths within urban low-income communities by the local leadership marginalizes the ‘non-elite’. The lack of communication, indeed competition, between different departments of local administration militate against coherent partnership in the delivery and management of urban infrastructure and services. The authors examine the potential of clearly focused NGOs to generate an awareness within and between low-income communities and local governments for new approaches to communication and capacity-building. |

Ecuadorian Society $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Social Class in Ecuador, Conaie, Religion in Ecuador, Sarayaku, Prostitution in Ecuador, Domestic Violence in Ecuador, Public Holidays in Ecuador, Premio Eugenio Espejo, Confeniae, Health in Ecuador, Tetete People. Excerpt: Ecuador’s elite includes Sierra latifundistas (large landowners), Costa agro-exporters, financiers, and industrialists. Commercial and industrial interests overlap with those of agriculture, as families in finance and industry often maintain at least a token interest in agriculture. Indeed, the purchase of land with the profits of commerce has long been considered a critical step in improving a family’s standing. In addition to this overlap, there are strong intragroup ties among the elite; kinship and marriage contribute to cohesion. Newly rich families try to turn their economic success into social capital by marrying into older, established families. Historically, the basis of class in Ecuador lay in the control of land and the labor of those who lived on it. The Spanish conquistadors found the region devoid of valuable minerals and the ready wealth mining provided, so the combination of land and Indians welded together in vast haciendas formed the basis of the colonial economy. The few who held land constituted a rural oligarchy. The rest of society depended on this pivotal group, in varying degrees, for livelihood, political participation, and social identity. Hacienda owners spent much of their time in their urban residences; cities existed principally to serve their wants. The small, ill-defined middle levels of urban professionals found employment serving the commercial and administrative needs of the hacienda. Artisans likewise produced mainly for hacendados. The hacienda with its resident labor force was the c… More: |

Reflections On Big Spring $17.95 Reflections on Big Spring is a thoughtfully researched, highly readable celebration of the rich heritage of the Genesee River Valley, Pittsford, NY and the Big Spring that drew generations of Americans to the area. The Seneca Tribe who lived in the Genesee River Valley for five centuries were the fighting elite of the Iroquois Confederacy. The author chronicles the series of seminal decisions that led to the gradual displacement and ultimate downfall of these proud indigenous people. New Englanders immigrated to the great frontier of western New York State in the early 19th century seeking the well-publicized “agricultural el dorado”. These pioneers were of hearty stock and by nature, strong-willed risk-takers. From both of these sturdy gene pools came generations of brave war heroes, inspirational politicians, compassionate humanitarians, civil rights leaders, creative inventors, and revolutionary entrepreneurs. Their influence has been substantial not just locally but throughout the state, the country and the world. Follow the lives of resident humanitarians Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony as their inspired civil rights efforts make history. Consider the courage displayed by lesser-known local heroes who farmed, taught school or ran stores during the day and became “conductors” on the area’s Underground Railroad after dark. Oral histories of secret passages, tunnels, caverns and hidden rooms take readers on the “last 100 miles to freedom” ride.Seamlessly woven throughout the text are fascinating facts that define the uniqueness of the Genesee River Valley. While closely tied to its agricultural roots, the area is home to several of the world’s most prestigious business enterprises and was the birthplace of a wide variety of revolutionary technologies, business strategies and labor-management practices. Discover how Genesee Valley residents shared amateur photography, xerography, the UPC label, self-service groceries, white hots and cream style |

The Diary of Hannah Callender Sansom $18.35 Hannah Callender Sansom (1737-1801) witnessed the effects of the tumultuous eighteenth century: political struggles, war and peace, and economic development. She experienced the pull of traditional emphases on duty, subjection, and hierarchy and the emergence of radical new ideas promoting free choice, liberty, and independence. Regarding these changes from her position as a well-educated member of the colonial Quaker elite and as a resident of Philadelphia, the principal city in North America, this assertive, outspoken woman described her life and her society in a diary kept intermittently from the time she was twenty-one years old in 1758 through the birth of her first grandchild in 1788.As a young woman, she enjoyed sociable rounds of visits and conviviality. She also had considerable freedom to travel and to develop her interests in the arts, literature, and religion. In 1762, under pressure from her father, she married fellow Quaker Samuel Sansom. While this arranged marriage made financial and social sense, her father’s plans failed to consider the emerging goals of sensibility, including free choice and emotional fulfillment in marriage. Hannah Callender Sansom’s struggle to become reconciled to an unhappy marriage is related in frank terms both through daily entries and in certain silences in the record. Ultimately she did create a life of meaning centered on children, religion, and domesticity. When her beloved daughter Sarah was of marriageable age, Hannah Callender Sansom made certain that, despite risking her standing among Quakers, Sarah was able to marry for love.Long held in private hands, the complete text of Hannah Callender Sanson’s extraordinary diary is published here for the first time. In-depth interpretive essays, as well as explanatory footnotes, provide context for students and other readers. The diary is one of the earliest, fullest documents written by an American woman, and it provides fresh insights into women’s experience |

The German Mountain Army Soldier of WWII $44.95 The Mountain Troops of the German Army in World War II were an elite of a special kind.  Unlike the Panzer units, they did not field the mot modern equipment of their day.  Unlike the Waffen-SS, they were not hand-picked for their Nazi loyalty.  If anything, the respect attracted by their special cap and their Edelweiss insignia was earned by rather old-fashioned military virtues – by sheer physical prowess, in uniquely testing conditions.  The Gebirgsjager had to be able to do what other soldiers did – but in places where no other soldiers had the strength and the skills to go, and often in weather no other soldiers could face.Wade Krawczyk has been a military collector since the 1970s and has specialized in German Army Uniforms.  In pursuit of research he has traveled widely in Europe and Russia.  For many years he was a TV news cameraman and military correspondent on assignments around the globe.  Since 1993 he has worked as a film and TV costumier, armored and technical adviser mainly from the Warner Bros Studios on the Gold Coast.  This is his fifth publication on German uniforms for Crowood.  He lives in  Australia.Bart Jansen has been a collector of German militaria for more than 20 years, also a keen skier, he has specialized in the Wehrmacht Gebirgsjager.  In daily life Bart works as an IT specialist on a project basis.  He is a resident of Amsterdam, Holland. |

Washington’s U Street: A Biography $19.98 This book traces the history of the U Street neighborhood in Washington, D.C., from its Civil War–era origins to its recent gentrification. Home throughout the years to important scholars, entertainers, and political figures, as well as to historically prominent African American institutions, Washington’s U Street neighborhood is a critical zone of contact between black and white America. Howard University and the Howard Theater are both located there; Duke Ellington grew up in the neighborhood; and diplomat Ralph Bunche, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, and medical researcher Charles Drew were all members of the community. This robustly diverse neighborhood included residents of different races and economic classes when it arose during the Civil War. Jim Crow laws came to the District after the Compromise of 1877, and segregation followed in the mid-1880s. Over the next century, U Street emerged as an energetic center of African American life in Washington. The mid-twentieth-century rise of cultural and educational institutions brought with it the establishment of African American middle and elite classes, ironically fostering biases within the black community. Later, with residential desegregation, many of the elites moved on and U Street entered decades of decline, suffered rioting in 1968, but has seen an initially fitful resurgence that has recently taken hold.Blair A. Ruble, a jazz aficionado, prominent urbanist, and longtime resident of Washington, D.C., is uniquely equipped to undertake the history of this culturally important area. His work is a rare instance of original research told in an engaging and compelling voice. |
